A 61-year-old electric cycle rider lost his life on Wednesday evening following a tragic accident on Craig Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD). Dead is Lal Singh of New Hope.

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the fatal accident occurred at about 5:10 p.m. and involved motor lorry GAP 5043, driven by a 29-year-old man of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, and Kwatta, Suriname, and an unregistered electric cycle ridden by Singh.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the lorry was proceeding south along the eastern driving lane of Craig Public Road in a line of slow-moving traffic when the driver reportedly felt the vehicle pass over what he believed to be a hump.

The driver later heard someone shouting for him to stop. He immediately brought the lorry to a halt and reversed a short distance.

Upon checking, Singh was discovered lying beneath the left side of the lorry near the front wheel with injuries about his body. The electric cycle was found nearby.

Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned to the scene and transported Singh to the Diamond Regional Hospital in a semi-conscious condition.

Despite efforts by medical personnel, he later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

His body has since been taken to Sandy’s Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. Police said two breathalyzer tests were administered to the lorry driver and no trace of alcohol was detected in his system.

The driver remains in police custody as investigations into the fatal accident continue.
