A suspected armed robber was shot and killed on Wednesday night after allegedly opening fire on a police rank during an attempted robbery at a supermarket on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the incident occurred at about 8:40 p.m. while three identifiable men were allegedly attempting to carry out a robbery under arms at the business place.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the trio entered the supermarket, with one of the suspects armed with a handgun. The men reportedly held two unarmed security guards at gunpoint and ordered them to lie on the ground.
Police said a rank who was on mobile patrol observed what was happening, stopped, and approached the suspects. During the confrontation, the armed suspect allegedly discharged a round in the direction of the police officer, who returned fire with his service pistol.
The suspects then reportedly fled the supermarket in different directions. However, the armed suspect later fell into a nearby drain along Mandela Avenue.
Police recovered a .38 revolver containing three live rounds, along with several spent shells. The suspect was examined at the scene and pronounced dead by a doctor on duty. Investigations are ongoing.
