Police have arrested a 23-year-old farmer in connection with the murder of seven-year-old Adriel Aftab Mohamed and the attempted murder of a 72-year-old pensioner at Zeelugt New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).

In an update on the case, police said the arrest was made on Saturday, June 6, following continued investigations into the deadly attack that occurred on Friday, June 5, at Phase Three, Zeelugt.

The investigation relates to the killing of young Adriel and the injuries sustained by the elderly woman, both of whom lived at the same address.

The suspect, a resident of Zeelugt, is currently in police custody, assisting with the investigation.

The arrest comes one day after police first reported that the child had been found motionless inside the house, while the 72-year-old pensioner was discovered injured.

Investigators had said a relative made the gruesome discovery shortly after 5:00 a.m. on Friday.

The pensioner was taken to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where she was admitted in a stable condition.

Police also recovered a knife suspected to have been used in the attack, while CCTV footage from the area has been under review. Investigations are ongoing.
