A Guyana Defence Force patrol came under hostile fire on two occasions while carrying out border security operations along the Cuyuni River in Region Seven on Tuesday afternoon.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) said the incidents occurred at approximately 1610 hrs and 1650 hrs at known locations along the river.
The Force said the patrol was at the time escorting civilian vessels when it encountered the gunfire.
According to the release, the soldiers responded in keeping with operational procedures and were able to safely manoeuvre out of the area on both occasions without any injuries.
The GDF did not provide further details on who opened fire or the circumstances that led to the exchanges.
It, however, said it continues to maintain a sustained operational presence along Guyana’s western border and remains committed to protecting the country’s territorial integrity and the safety of border communities.
