A 23-year-old man accused of causing a road accident in Kitty, Georgetown that left a 63-year-old pedestrian seriously injured has appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer several traffic-related charges.
Riyad Ahmad of Happy Acres, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was on Wednesday arraigned before Magistrate Shivani Lalaram on charges of dangerous driving and uninsured motor vehicle.
The dangerous driving charge was instituted under Section 36(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, while the uninsured motor vehicle offence was brought under Section 3(1) of the Motor Vehicle Third Party Risk Act, Chapter 51:02.
When the charges were read to him, Ahmad pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving but guilty to operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Magistrate Lalaram granted the accused $40,000 bail on the dangerous driving charge.
For the uninsured motor vehicle offence, Ahmad was fined $35,000, with an alternative of three weeks’ imprisonment if the fine is not paid. The dangerous driving matter was adjourned to April 8, 2026, for continuation of the proceedings.
According to reports, Ahmad is accused of causing an accident on February 11 in Kitty after allegedly jumping a stop sign and colliding with another vehicle. During the collision, 63-year-old pedestrian Waveney Fernandes was struck and sustained serious injuries.
