Police are investigating a mining pit cave-in at St. Elizabeth Backdam, Potaro, Region Eight, where two miners were reported trapped on Saturday afternoon.
The incident occurred at about 3:23 p.m., according to the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
The trapped men have been identified as 32-year-old pork-knocker Franky Hussain of the North West District, Region One, and 38-year-old Brazilian national Neunes Neunes Da Silva.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the two men, along with other workers, were working in a mining pit about 60 feet deep when sections of the eastern and western walls suddenly collapsed.
Police said the other workers managed to escape, but Hussain and Da Silva were trapped beneath the fallen debris. The cave-in also buried an excavator. Recovery efforts are being led by the owner of the mining operation and other workers on-site.
Police ranks and representatives from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission are on the ground assisting as investigations continue.
