A 34-year-old taxi driver died on Tuesday night after losing control of the vehicle he was driving and crashing into roadside structures along the Cullen Public Road on the Essequibo Coast.

Dead is Floyd Ricardo Mal of Lot 79 Huis’t Dieren, Essequibo Coast.

The fatal accident occurred at around 21:30 hrs along a stretch of road known for its sharp right-hand bend. Mal was at the wheel of motor car HD 8678, owned by Yonette Sargeant of Pomona, when the incident took place.

Initial reports indicate that the vehicle was travelling south along the eastern side of the roadway when the driver reportedly lost control. The car is said to have left the road, striking a lamp post before hitting a signboard and eventually crashing into a tree.

Residents living nearby responded quickly after hearing the impact and helped pull the injured driver from the badly damaged vehicle. He was rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital, where medical staff attempted to save his life.

Despite those efforts, Mal was pronounced dead at approximately 22:35 hrs while undergoing treatment.

Police later visited the scene and have launched an investigation to determine what led to the crash.

His body was identified by his wife, Sherika Mal, and has since been taken to the Suddie Public Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over the family, particularly as Mal’s son is currently sitting the National Grade Six Assessment examinations on Wednesday and Thursday.
