Region Four continues to carry the heaviest weight of Guyana’s houselot application backlog, with more than 52,000 of the 78,000-plus pending applicants clustered in the Demerara-Mahaica district, Minister of Housing Collin Croal has said.
Croal said the demand in Region Four remains disproportionately high due to population concentration and the pull of jobs and economic activity closer to Georgetown.

As a result, while the government expects to fully clear pending applications in all other regions, Region Four will remain the most challenging area to complete in its entirety in the immediate term.
“Of the 78,000 plus pending applicants, over 52,000 are from the Region 4 bracket,” the Minister noted, adding that outside of Region Four, the ministry is committing to “100%” clearance of the backlog.
Over the last five years, Croal said more than 53,000 houselots were allocated nationally, but the ministry’s updated list still shows tens of thousands of applicants waiting for allocation.
To reduce the backlog, the Housing Minister said the ministry is intensifying efforts to identify and release new lands through coordination with state agencies, including the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, and the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo).
