A 38-year-old man lost his life on Saturday afternoon following a collision involving a motorcycle and a pedal cycle on Republic Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The dead man has been identified as Akeem Agard, formerly of 39 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam.
Police said the accident occurred at around 13:40h. Initial reports indicate that Agard was riding a bicycle when a motorcycle, bearing registration CL 5071, approached from behind, travelling south along the eastern driving lane.
The motorcycle was being ridden by Kenneth Clarkston, 21, of Lot 210 Fort Ordinance, East Canje, Berbice.
Investigators indicated that, as the motorcyclist reportedly attempted to overtake, the cyclist turned left towards the western side of the roadway, resulting in a collision in the western driving lane.
Both riders were flung onto the road and sustained injuries. Agard was reportedly taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital by emergency medical technicians in an unconscious state, but he was pronounced dead at approximately 14:10h.
Clarkston was taken to the same hospital in a police vehicle. He was conscious and remains under medical care.
Police noted that a breathalyser test could not be administered at the time due to the motorcyclist’s condition. Investigations are ongoing.
