Over 100 prison officers promoted

The Ministry of Home Affairs announces the approval of promotions for 101 Guyana Prison Service (GPS) officers, the most comprehensive advancement exercise in recent years, reinforcing Government’s commitment to strengthening correctional leadership and institutional stability.

The promotions span supervisory, administrative, and technical levels to expand command capacity, improve middle-management oversight, and advance security and rehabilitative reforms nationwide.

Under President Ali’s leadership, the Prison Service modernization invests in human capital alongside physical upgrades, enhancing the Guyana Prison Service’s capacity to provide secure custody and advance structured rehabilitation.

After thorough administrative and procedural reviews, these promotions restore structured career progression, improve succession planning, and strengthen operational accountability across correctional facilities.

Approved promotions include:

• 5 Superintendents of Prisons

• 13 Assistant Superintendents of Prisons

• 2 Cadet Officers (Internal) on probation

• 17 Chief Prison Officers

• 28 Principal Prison Officers II

• 23 Principal Prison Officers I

• 12 Prison Trade Instructors

• 1 Coxswain

Minister Walrond posited that, “These promotions place trusted officers in positions of greater responsibility. Secure facilities and effective rehabilitation depend on their discipline, fairness, and daily commitment to lawful and humane custody.”

The promotions support a comprehensive reform programme that includes the following:

• Infrastructure modernization at Lusignan, Mazaruni, and other facilities

• Enhanced security systems with electronic monitoring

• Professional training for more than 150 officers in 2026 in correctional management and human rights standards

• Skills-based reintegration programmes strengthening pathways for inmates

Minister Walrond further urged those promoted to pursue continuous personal development: “Advancement within the Service must be accompanied by academic progression and skills-building.”

The Ministry of Home Affairs will continue advancing reforms to strengthen professional standards, protect officer welfare, and reinforce public confidence in correctional administration.
