A 36-year-old man from Lima, Essequibo Coast, lost his life while several others were injured following a three-vehicle collision along the Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), on Saturday afternoon.

Dead is Ruddy Raymond, who was a passenger in a minibus involved in the crash that occurred at about 17:00 hrs. According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the accident involved minibus BAH 9443, driven by a 31-year-old man of Kitty, Georgetown; motor lorry GAF 1093, driven by a 55-year-old man of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD); and motor car PJJ 1664, driven by a 28-year-old resident of Diamond.

Police said initial investigations revealed that the minibus was proceeding north along the eastern driving lane of the western carriageway of Providence Public Road, while the motor lorry was travelling north in the western driving lane of the same carriageway.

It is alleged that the lorry driver made a sharp right turn into the path of the minibus, causing the minibus to collide with the right side of the lorry.

The impact caused the minibus to strike the median before crossing into the eastern carriageway, where it toppled onto its right side and crashed into the motor car, which was travelling south along the eastern driving lane.

As a result of the collision, the driver of the motor car and his 23-year-old female passenger of Friendship, sustained minor injuries. The minibus driver and seven passengers also suffered injuries.

Emergency Medical Technicians responded to the scene, where Raymond was examined by a doctor and pronounced dead. His body was later transported to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The injured minibus driver and six surviving passengers were taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital for treatment. Police also conducted two breathalyser tests on the lorry driver, which returned readings of 0.003% and 0.004%.

The lorry driver remains in police custody as investigations continue into the fatal accident.
