Sarah Elizabeth Shivpersaud, the 26-year-old woman accused of killing her seven-year-old daughter at Fyrish Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was on Monday remanded to prison after she was formally charged with murder.
Shivpersaud, a domestic worker of Fyrish Village, appeared before Magistrate Michelle Mathias at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court, where the indictable charge was read to her.
She was not required to plead. The charge relates to the death of her daughter, Isabella Dabidyal, a student of Cropper Primary School, also of Fyrish Village.
The case was adjourned to May 12, 2026. Police had reported that the child died on Sunday, April 5, following an incident at the family’s home.
Initial investigations had indicated that Isabella was allegedly suffocated, while her younger brother was also reportedly attacked but survived. Their mother was later taken to the hospital under police guard after allegedly injuring herself.
A post-mortem examination conducted days later found that Isabella died from manual strangulation.
