The Ministry of Health (MoH) has launched Vaccination Week in the Americas in partnership with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization, while urging citizens to guard against misinformation that could undermine immunisation efforts.

At the launch in Georgetown on Sunday, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony said Guyana has managed to keep vaccination coverage above 95 per cent for most antigens, even as many countries have seen declines since the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said vaccines remain one of the country’s most effective public health tools, helping to prevent serious diseases and save lives.

Dr. Anthony also sounded a warning about the spread of false and misleading information, noting that misinformation continues to affect vaccine uptake and public confidence.

He stressed the need for stronger public education and continued trust in science-based medical advice.

According to the Ministry, Guyana’s immunisation programme has been reinforced through its long-standing partnership with PAHO/WHO, as well as targeted investments in cold chain infrastructure, solar-powered refrigeration for hinterland communities, and the ongoing training of healthcare workers.

These measures, the ministry said, are aimed at ensuring vaccines can be safely delivered even in the country’s most remote areas.

Special focus was also placed on Guyana’s Human Papillomavirus, or HPV, vaccination programme, which targets boys and girls between the ages of nine and 15 and is also available to women up to age 45.

The ministry said the HPV initiative is intended to significantly reduce, and eventually eliminate, cervical cancer in Guyana.

Parents and guardians are being encouraged to review their children’s vaccination records and visit the nearest health facility to ensure that all recommended immunisations are up to date.

The ministry said the observance of Vaccination Week reaffirms Guyana’s commitment to protecting the population through immunisation.
