A generic version of Ozempic could become available on the Guyanese market within the next two months, according to Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony, who says the medication is currently going through the local registration process.
Appearing on the Starting Point Podcast, Dr. Anthony said one of the companies manufacturing the generic version has already applied for registration in Guyana.
He explained that the dossier submitted to the Food and Drug Department is now being processed and, once approved, the medication will be introduced to the local market.
“Very soon, I would say maybe in another two months or so, the generic version of Ozempic would be made available on the local market,” the Health Minister said.
Dr. Anthony noted that Ozempic and similar medications have been helpful to many patients, but warned that they must be used properly and only under medical supervision.
He stressed that misuse of the drug can create serious problems for patients if it is taken without professional guidance.
According to the minister, the medication is not an over-the-counter item and will require a prescription.
“You have to get a prescription. Somebody has to supervise your care,” he said.
Dr. Anthony also cautioned that people should use the medicine only for the purposes for which it was intended.
