Police have arrested a 27-year-old food vendor and recovered $500,000, a revolver and a car as investigations continue into Saturday’s armed robbery at a beverage depot in No. 2 Village, East Canje, Berbice.

The suspect, of Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam, was arrested around 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, in connection with the robbery of a 57-year-old businessman.

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), investigators subsequently acted on information received and recovered the cash and a motor car suspected to have been used during the robbery.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a .32 revolver containing two rounds of ammunition.

Police said the firearm, ammunition, cash and vehicle were lodged pending further investigation. The statement did not specify where the money and car were found or confirm whether the cash formed part of the stolen proceeds.

The businessman was robbed around 7:35 p.m. on October 10 while in the cashier area of his beverage depot, which occupies the lower floor of his premises.

Police previously reported that three masked men entered the establishment carrying a handgun, a baseball bat and a cutlass. They confronted the businessman, demanded money and took an undisclosed sum before escaping in a dark-grey car.

No shots were fired, and no injuries were reported. Investigators also obtained CCTV footage from the area for review.
