Cop under close arrest after miner shot during creek confrontation

A Detective Sergeant has been placed under close arrest after a 37-year-old gold miner was shot during a confrontation at Chanta Creek along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the incident occurred at about 5:00 p.m. Preliminary investigations indicate that the policeman was at the creek with family members when he became involved in an altercation with several men.

Police said the rank was allegedly attacked with a cutlass during the confrontation.

Investigators said the officer then discharged a round from his force-issued 9mm pistol in the direction of the men, during which the gold miner, who is from Yarrowkabra Creek, sustained a suspected gunshot wound to his right leg.

The injured man was picked up by relatives along with police ranks and rushed to the McKenzie Hospital, where he remains a patient. Police said his condition is stable.

The Detective Sergeant has since been placed under close arrest as investigations continue.
