Twenty-two-year-old Shaka “Concrete Man” Phillips has admitted to killing his former partner, 26-year-old teacher and mother of three Jenel Pollydore, who was gunned down at a wedding reception in Linden last year.
Phillips, a labourer of Amelia’s Ward, Linden, pleaded guilty to murder on Monday before Justice Priscilla Chandra-Hanif at the Demerara High Court.
He is expected to return to court on September 30 for sentencing. Pollydore, who lived at Lower Kara Kara, Linden, was shot dead on July 19, 2025, while attending a wedding reception at the R&R Hotel in Central Amelia’s Ward.
Phillips is the father of Pollydore’s youngest child. According to reports, Phillips confronted Pollydore during the reception after questioning why she had not been answering his phone calls. An argument followed, during which he reportedly pulled out a handgun and shot her.
Police had said Pollydore tried to run toward the hotel’s pool area, but Phillips pursued her and allegedly fired two more shots before fleeing the scene.
Ranks who responded found Pollydore lying motionless near the pool with gunshot wounds to the right side of her face and the back of her head.
Two spent 9mm shells were recovered at the scene. Pollydore was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police later said Pollydore had ended her relationship with Phillips and had previously secured a restraining order against him following alleged domestic abuse.
Phillips was arrested one day after the killing and later charged with murder.
He first appeared virtually before Magistrate Rondel Weever at the Linden Magistrate’s Court, where the indictable charge was read to him. At that stage, he was not required to plead and was remanded to prison.
Justice Chandra-Hanif has ordered the preparation of psychiatric, prison conduct and probation reports, as well as reports on the aggravating and mitigating factors connected to the offence.
