A 28-year-old Albion Front fisherman charged with manslaughter over the stabbing death of another fisherman earlier this month was released from custody on Wednesday after being granted $600,000 bail.
Videsh Singh, of Albion Front, Corentyne, appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy, where his attorney renewed an application for bail despite objections from the prosecution.
Singh is charged in connection with the September 6, 2026 death of 34-year-old Franklyn “Franky” Sauers. The matter was initially being heard at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court but was transferred to the Albion Magistrate’s Court during Wednesday’s proceedings.
Singh’s attorney, Vinay Punwa, had first sought bail when his client appeared in court on September 9.
According to the defence’s account presented to the court, Singh and Sauers had been involved in an earlier altercation at a bar. Punwa said Singh later left and returned home, but Sauers subsequently went to his residence, where another confrontation occurred.
The attorney contended that Singh feared for his own safety and that of his family and armed himself with a knife during the encounter. Sauers sustained injuries that later proved fatal.
Those assertions form part of the defence’s case and have not been determined by the court. The prosecution had opposed Singh’s release at his first court appearance and maintained its objection when the matter was called again on Wednesday.
Magistrate Hardy nevertheless granted bail in the sum of $600,000. The amount was subsequently posted, and Singh was released. He is expected to return to court on October 6 for reporting and fixture.
Police had previously said officers responded to a house at Albion Front on the night of September 6 and found Sauers lying motionless in the living room with apparent stab wounds to his neck and left rib area.
He was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Singh was arrested at the scene and was later charged with manslaughter.
