The truck driver, who reportedly caused the six-vehicle accident on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge that claimed the life of a 25-year-old man on Thursday, was unlicensed.

This was disclosed by Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill. The accident, which occurred just after 9:00 hours, claimed the life of Scott Dorwart, a taxi driver from Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

He was employed by Safe and Reliable Cabs for approximately one year. According to preliminary reports, the accident involved a truck that suffered a mechanical failure while on the bridge.

The truck reportedly rolled downhill and crashed into several other vehicles. Several others were also injured in the accident.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, in a statement on Thursday, said it dispatched one fire tender and two ambulances, supported by a team of four firefighters and eight Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).

On arrival, firefighters used hydraulic extrication equipment, including the Jaws of Life and a spreader, to cut open a vehicle and free one critically injured person who was trapped. EMTs provided emergency medical care at the scene before transporting the injured individual to a medical facility for further treatment.
