A boat carrying ranks from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and Guyana Defence Force (GDF), along with a Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) officer, sank shortly after leaving a landing at Karasabai Village, South Pakaraimas (Normandy Crossing) on Saturday morning.
Police said the incident occurred at about 08:10 hrs on Saturday, January 24, 2026, during a joint operation along the Rupununi River. Preliminary investigations revealed that the ranks were boarding an 18-foot aluminium boat at the landing when the vessel sank shortly after departing.
In all, five joint services ranks, including the coxswain, and one GGMC officer were on board. No injuries were reported, police said.
However, during the incident, three service rifles and a quantity of ammunition were reported missing in the river. The GDF is conducting recovery efforts in the area, while police investigations remain ongoing.
