Read below the full statement from the Guyana Elections Commission (ERC):

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) hereby issues a formal public invitation to Mr. Kidackie Amsterdam, host of the online social media broadcast show “Guyanese Morning Time,” on KAMS TV to attend a mandatory engagement at the Commission’s Secretariat located at 66 Peter Rose & Anira Streets, Queenstown, Georgetown.

This invitation follows several unsuccessful attempts by the Commission to contact Mr. Amsterdam directly and via written correspondence sent to the Working People’s Alliance, the political party with which he is affiliated. The ERC wishes to discuss the prevalence of some statements aired on his programme since 2024 that can be deemed in contravention of the Racial Hostility Act and specific infractions under the Laws of Guyana.

The Commission has observed with concern a pattern of content featuring:

  • Racial stereotypes and inflammatory language.
  • References to violence and provocative rhetoric.
  • A lack of adequate moderation, where callers are permitted to air divisive content without being restrained or cautioned by the host.

As a constitutional body, the ERC is tasked with the promotion of harmony and the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination. While the Commission respects the principles of free speech, it reminds all broadcasters and social media personalities that such freedoms carry a responsibility to ensure content does not incite hatred or threaten the peace and security of our multi-ethnic society.  The ERC intends to use this meeting to:

  1. Communicate clear expectations regarding responsible broadcasting.
  2. Reinforce the legal obligations of content creators under the Laws of Guyana.
  3. Collaborate on ways to ensure the Guyanese Morning Time Show promotes respect, unity, and social cohesion.

Mr. Amsterdam is requested to visit the ERC Secretariat for this engagement during standard office hours:

  • Days: Monday through Friday
  • Time: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (Friday until 3:30 PM)

The ERC remains committed to its mandate of fostering a “One People” atmosphere and urges Mr. Amsterdam to respond promptly to this call for dialogue in the interest of national peace and social stability.
