A Brazilian man was shot during an armed ambush at Mara Mara Backdam, Middle Mazaruni River in Region Seven, on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the incident occurred between 16:30hrs and 17:00hrs and was committed against a 32-year-old gold miner from Blankenburg, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
According to the police, the 32-year-old miner was travelling from a mining pit to his camp with two co-workers on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) when an armed man emerged from nearby bushes, intercepted them, and ordered them to dismount.
During the confrontation, the suspect discharged a round, which struck one of the workers, a 62-year-old Brazilian gold miner, on his left foot above the ankle. Police said two additional masked gunmen, armed with what appeared to be firearms, later joined the initial suspect.
The men were then taken to the mining camp, which was ransacked, but the police said no valuables were obtained. The suspects subsequently escaped with the ATV and fled in an unknown direction.
The injured worker was transported to the Bartica Regional Hospital, where he is receiving medical attention, Police said. Investigations are ongoing as ranks continue efforts to locate and apprehend the suspects.
