A fire that tore through a two-storey house at Palmyra on Saturday afternoon is being treated as a suspected arson incident.
This is according to Berbice Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald, who disclosed that the New Amsterdam Fire Station received a report at about 15:19h, prompting firefighters to respond quickly to the location to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby properties.
The damaged building, a two-floor wooden-and-concrete structure measuring approximately 15.24 metres by 6.10 metres, is owned by Pritiharaj Singh, who is overseas, McDonald explained.
He noted that the house, which had two bedrooms, was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
Based on preliminary findings, McDonald said investigators believe the fire was maliciously set, and inquiries are continuing as authorities work to determine who was responsible and the motive behind the incident.
