Venezuelan man killed after lorry overturns into rice field on Essequibo Coast

A Venezuelan man was killed on Sunday, after the motor lorry in which he was travelling overturned while crossing a wooden bridge at Queenstown, Essequibo Coast.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that the incident occurred at about 10:46 hrs and involved motor lorry GAJ 7403, which a 34-year-old man of Hoff-Van-Aurich, Essequibo Coast was driving.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the lorry was proceeding east along the roadway when the driver allegedly lost control while crossing the bridge, causing the vehicle to topple into a rice field on the southern side of the road before turning turtle.

At the time of the incident, a 26-year-old man of Johanna Cecilia was seated in the front passenger seat, while two Venezuelan nationals, men aged 27 and 30, both of Annandale, Essequibo Coast, were in the tray of the lorry.

Police said Isaias Rojas, a 27-year-old Venezuelan national of Annandale, was pinned beneath the vehicle during the crash. He was later extracted and taken in an unconscious state to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

The body is at the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The driver was arrested and remains in custody, assisting with investigations. Police noted that a breathalyser test conducted on him showed five micrograms, which is below the legal limit of 30 micrograms. Investigations are ongoing.
