Police are hunting a motorist who fled after a deadly collision on Cemetery Road, Georgetown, early Monday, leaving a 59-year-old electric cyclist dead.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the fatal hit-and-run occurred on Monday, at about 00:30 hrs and involved motor car PAB 6212, described as a dark-coloured Toyota Rumion, and electric cycle EM 6699, ridden by Trevon Bacchus, of Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Georgetown.
According to preliminary investigations, the Toyota Rumion was proceeding north along the western drive lane of Cemetery Road at an alleged fast rate of speed when Bacchus, who was also travelling north along the extreme western edge of the roadway, was struck from behind after the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle.
Police said the driver continued north and later turned west onto Princess Street without stopping. The driver’s name, age and address remain unknown, and he is currently at large, with ranks making efforts to locate and apprehend him.
As a result of the impact, Bacchus sustained injuries to his head and about his body. He was picked up in a semi-conscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead while receiving medical attention at about 04:30 hrs, police said.
His body was later taken to the GPHC Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. Investigators said CCTV footage is being reviewed as the probe continues.
