An unidentified male pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run style collision early Sunday after he was struck by a car on the Orangestein Public Road, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that the accident occurred at about 04:10h and involved motor car PAB 2332, driven by a 25-year-old man from Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara (WCD), and a pedestrian whose name, age and address remain unknown.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the vehicle was proceeding east along the northern side of the roadway at an alleged high rate of speed when the pedestrian, who was also walking east on the northern side, reportedly ran across the road from north to south into the path of the car.

Police said the driver swerved to avoid a collision, but the front left side of the vehicle struck the pedestrian, after which the car ended up in the southern trench.

The injured man was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was later escorted to the Ezekiel Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

A breathalyser test was administered to the driver, who remains in custody, and no alcohol was detected, police said. Investigations are continuing.
