Authorities have activated a coordinated response after a barge reportedly carrying approximately 8,000 barrels of waste oil was found tilting significantly at a private wharf on the East Bank of Demerara.

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC), in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, said the vessel posed a potential oil spill risk. However, no spill had been confirmed, and the situation remained stable at the time of the update.

Teams were mobilised to assess the barge and take precautionary measures after it was observed listing while berthed at the facility.

The response involves the CDC, Maritime Administration Department, Environmental Protection Agency, Guyana Energy Agency, Guyana Fire Service and Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard.

Efforts are focused on safely stabilising the vessel and reducing the risk of environmental damage. Containment equipment and other response resources have also been positioned in case a spill occurs.

“At this time, no oil spill has been confirmed. However, contingency measures, including containment and response resources, have been positioned to facilitate a swift and effective response should the need arise,” the CDC stated.

The commission said precautions were being taken to protect nearby communities, public safety and the surrounding environment, with authorities continuously monitoring the situation.
