Worker electrocuted during overnight pipeline construction in Sophia
A subcontractor working on a China Railway First Group project died early Friday after construction activity made contact with a live electrical network in Sophia, Guyana Power and Light said.
The utility said the incident occurred at approximately 1 a.m. near Congress Place while the subcontractor was conducting pipe-laying work.
GPL did not identify the worker, disclose his employer or explain what machinery or equipment touched the energized infrastructure. The company described the contact as accidental but did not provide the findings of a completed investigation.
The incident tripped two feeders. The Sophia F3 feeder interruption affected Lamaha Gardens and Section K, Campbellville, for approximately one hour. The Sophia F6 feeder was offline for about 30 minutes, affecting customers in areas A through E of Field Sophia.
GPL urged contractors working near electrical infrastructure to coordinate with the utility, identify hazards and establish protective measures before beginning work.
