A Sophia, Greater Georgetown woman was arrested on Wednesday after prison officers reportedly discovered suspected cannabis concealed in a box she intended to send to an inmate at Mazaruni Prison.

Tachanna Henry, of ‘C’ Field, Sophia, was detained around 10:15 a.m., while visiting Georgetown Prison.

According to prison authorities, officers searched the box and found several plastic bags containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis. The package was intended for prisoner Kevon Alfred, who is housed at the Mazaruni facility.

Henry was informed of the discovery and subsequently taken to the Alberttown Police Station, along with the suspected cannabis.

Following the discovery, Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot warned against attempts to introduce contraband into correctional facilities, saying those involved could face serious legal consequences.

He also cautioned that the contraband trade puts inmates, prison officers and the wider public at risk. Elliot commended the officers involved for their vigilance and prompt action.
