A six-year-old boy died after sustaining a chop wound to his neck at Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), on Wednesday afternoon.
The child has been identified as Ifeng Cao, a Chinese national. Police said preliminary enquiries indicate that the incident occurred around 3:45 p.m.
Cao was taken to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.
The man was subsequently arrested and remains in police custody as investigators probe the alleged murder.
Police have not disclosed the circumstances leading to the incident.
Investigations are ongoing.
