A 37-year-old Cuban national was fatally stabbed in the chest during an alleged altercation with a co-worker at a shipyard at Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara (EBD), late Saturday night, according to the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
The dead man has been identified as Luis Angel Rodriguez Guillen. A 32-year-old Cuban national, who also worked at the shipyard, remains in police custody.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the two men were involved in an argument around 11 p.m. on Saturday. The dispute reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation, during which the suspect allegedly armed himself with a knife and stabbed Guillen in the chest.
Guillen subsequently collapsed in the hallway of the workers’ quarters at the shipyard. Other workers restrained the suspect and handed him over to police, who arrested him. Investigators also recovered a knife suspected to have been used in the stabbing and retained it as evidence.
Guillen was taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead. His body was later transferred to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home and awaits a post-mortem examination.
