The Government of Guyana has acquired the Berbice River Bridge for approximately $400 million as the Berbice Bridge Company Inc. (BBCI) winds up its operations.
This publication understands that the Ministry of Public Works is now expected to assume responsibility for operating and maintaining the bridge, with former BBCI employees reportedly remaining involved in its day-to-day operations.
The transfer comes days after notices published in the Official Gazette confirmed that BBCI was being wound up. According to one of the notices, company members approved a special resolution on August 21, 2026, to wind up BBCI from that date.
A separate notice dated September 4 stated that chartered accountant Raan Motilall had been appointed liquidator. The acquisition effectively places the existing Berbice River crossing under direct Government control nearly two decades after it began operating.
The 1.57-kilometre bridge was constructed at a cost of approximately $8 billion and opened to traffic in 2008, creating a direct road connection across the Berbice River.
The National Insurance Scheme was among the major shareholders in the company.
The takeover also comes as Government moves ahead with plans for a new four-lane bridge across the Berbice River at a different location.
