A 29-year-old taxi driver has been remanded to prison after he was charged in connection with the armed robbery at the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) on Woolford Avenue, Georgetown.
Dexter Leung of Hunter Street, Georgetown, appeared on Monday before Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where two robbery under arms charges were read to him.
Police allege that on August 18, 2026, Leung and others robbed Dennis Ragnauth, a 63-year-old security guard, of $3,815,540 in cash and a Samsung Galaxy cellular phone. The items were reportedly the property of the CIOG.
The court heard that Ragnauth was on duty and conducting checks around the compound when four masked men entered the property. One of the men was allegedly armed with a knife, while another carried a crowbar.
During the incident, the security guard was restrained and relieved of his cellular phone.
Police said one of the suspects stayed with Ragnauth while the others made their way toward the building.
Investigators said the men gained entry to the lower flat of the building through a window, ransacked several areas and found the cash before escaping.
Following a review of CCTV footage, Leung was arrested and later charged.
He was remanded to prison and is expected to make his next court appearance on September 15, 2026.
