A police corporal accused of killing a 15-year-old pedestrian through dangerous driving is scheduled to go on trial Aug. 17.
Yonelle Cumberbatch, 35, of Eastville Housing Scheme, Annandale, has pleaded not guilty to causing the death of Navindra Mahes, a student of Annandale Secondary School.
The charge stems from an Oct. 30, 2025, collision on the Success Public Road along the East Coast Demerara corridor.
Police allege Cumberbatch was driving west on the northern carriageway when her car struck Mahes as he attempted to cross from the road’s median at about 7:30 a.m. Investigators said video footage formed part of the evidence collected after the collision.
Mahes was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital with head injuries and a fractured leg. He died while receiving treatment later that morning.
Cumberbatch remains on $500,000 bail. Her conditions reportedly include monthly reporting to police and the surrender of her passport.
