A well-known Cumberland, East Canje businessman died Saturday night after he was struck by a car while allegedly crossing the Nigg Public Road on the Corentyne, Berbice.
Dead is 42-year-old Ishwarnauth Bisram, also known as Ajay Bisram, formerly of Belvedere Squatting Area, Corentyne. Police said the accident occurred around 9:55 p.m. and involved motor car PZZ 1906, which was being driven by a 79-year-old doctor from the region.
According to preliminary investigations, the car was proceeding east along the northern lane of the Nigg Public Road when Bisram allegedly walked from south to north across the roadway and into the path of the vehicle.
Police said the driver reportedly applied brakes in an attempt to avoid hitting Bisram, but the front of the car collided with him. Bisram sustained injuries about his body and was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.
Investigations are ongoing.
