An accident on the Diamond New Interlink Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), on Tuesday morning claimed the life of a 30-year-old teacher and left six other persons injured.
Dead is Tineka Hicks, a teacher of Great Diamond. Police said the fatal accident occurred at about 08:30 hrs and involved minibus BAH 4679, which was being driven by a 52-year-old man from Diamond. At the time, the minibus had seven occupants, including Hicks.
Reports are that the minibus was proceeding north along the western driving lane of the Diamond New Interlink Road. The road surface was wet due to heavy rainfall.
While the driver was reportedly overtaking another vehicle, he allegedly lost control of the minibus, causing it to topple onto its right side, skid in a north-westerly direction, and end up in a drain on the western side of the road.
Several occupants sustained injuries, while Hicks was pinned inside the vehicle. Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned to the scene, and Hicks was examined by a doctor on duty, who pronounced her dead.
Her body was later escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
The six other occupants, comprising three students and three adults, were taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where they were examined by doctors, treated, and sent away.
Police said two breathalyzer tests were conducted on the driver, and no trace of alcohol was found in his system. The driver is in police custody, assisting with the investigation. Investigations are ongoing.
