Venezuelan worker shot in abdomen after Parika farmer opens fire on property

Police in Regional Division Three are investigating a shooting incident at Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), which left a 20-year-old Venezuelan construction worker hospitalised with a gunshot wound.

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the incident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 30.

Investigations revealed that a 62-year-old farmer of Parika was at home when he reportedly heard a sound coming from his front door. Further enquiries disclosed that the farmer, who is a licensed firearm holder, later observed the 20-year-old man under a shed on his property.

Police said that during the incident, two rounds were discharged from the firearm, resulting in the Venezuelan national sustaining injuries to the upper right side of his abdomen.

The injured man was taken to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where he was examined by a doctor on duty and admitted as a patient. The farmer subsequently reported the matter to the police.

Investigators have since lodged the licensed firearm, along with five live rounds and two spent shells, pending further investigations.

Police said several persons have been questioned and statements are being taken. Investigations are ongoing.
