President Dr. Irfaan Ali and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met in Toronto on Friday, with both leaders reaffirming the strong relationship between Canada and Guyana and discussing new opportunities for trade and investment.

According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada, the two leaders underscored the close people-to-people ties linking the countries, noting that more than 100,000 Canadians are of Guyanese ancestry.

The statement also highlighted Guyana’s importance to Canada as one of its largest trading partners within the Caribbean Community.

During the meeting, Carney and Ali discussed Canada’s role as a dependable trade and investment partner, as well as opportunities to expand Canadian investment in Guyana across several sectors, including energy, technology, agriculture, and mining.

Prime Minister Carney also extended best wishes for the Canada-Guyana Chamber of Commerce’s Business Forum, which is being held in Toronto this week as part of activities marking Guyana’s 60th Independence anniversary and six decades of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The Canadian leader also indicated that he is looking forward to visiting Guyana in the future. The statement said both leaders agreed to remain in close contact.
