A 36-year-old taxi driver is in critical condition after he was allegedly stabbed in the chest during a confrontation with another driver at Plum Park, Sophia, late Friday night.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the alleged wounding occurred at about 11:45 p.m. According to preliminary investigations, the taxi driver was driving his motor car along Farmers Field, Plum Park, Sophia, with a female passenger when he encountered the suspect driving in the opposite direction.
Police said that while in the vicinity of a barber shop, the two vehicles came alongside each other and neither was able to pass clearly, sparking an argument between the men.
The confrontation reportedly escalated into a physical altercation. Investigators allege that during the scuffle, the suspect armed himself with a knife and stabbed the taxi driver in the middle of his chest.
Police said the blade broke off during the attack and remained lodged in the victim’s chest.
Despite his injuries, the man reportedly drove himself to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was examined by a doctor and admitted as a patient.
His condition was listed as critical. The suspect, a 34-year-old painter of South Sophia, was arrested at the scene and taken to the Prashad Nagar Police Outpost, where he was placed into custody.
He was later escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital for medical attention. Police said a brown wooden knife handle, believed to be part of the weapon used in the attack, was recovered from the scene.
Investigators also observed CCTV cameras in the area and are currently reviewing the footage as part of the ongoing probe. The suspect remains in police custody.
