Shopkeeper flees as armed bandits open fire in Mahaica robbery bid

A 32-year-old shopkeeper was forced to run for her life on Saturday after two armed men stormed her business at Unity, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD), demanded cash, and fired a shot in her direction when she tried to escape.

The robbery under arms occurred at about 12:05 hrs. According to preliminary investigations, the woman was inside her shop when the two suspects entered and demanded money.

Police said the men then began searching drawers and other parts of the business place for cash. The shopkeeper reportedly ran from the shop during the ordeal, prompting one of the suspects to discharge a round in her direction.

She later fainted and was taken to hospital by public-spirited citizens. The suspects then attempted to escape, but were pursued by residents in the area along with police ranks.

During the chase, the men reportedly collided with a motor car and were subsequently apprehended by the police. Investigators recovered a firearm and the motorcycle used by the suspects.

The two men, a 21-year-old of 9 Field, Sophia, and a 20-year-old of Cummings Lodge, are currently receiving medical attention at the Enmore Regional Hospital for multiple injuries. Police investigations are continuing.
