A section of the Church’s Chicken outlet at Rosignol, West Bank Berbice (WBB), sustained damage on Sunday morning after a fire broke out while the restaurant was operating.
Berbice Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald said the emergency was reported to the Onverwagt Fire Station in Region Five at approximately 11:42 hrs.
He explained that fire crews from both the Onverwagt and New Amsterdam Fire Station responded promptly to the scene, where they encountered thick smoke coming from the building.
According to McDonald, firefighters immediately launched an aggressive firefighting operation, using vertical ventilation techniques to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
The fire damaged part of the ceiling, a heat extractor fan, several cooking appliances, and a quantity of chicken stored inside the restaurant.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the blaze may have started after flames ignited grease and fatty residue near the extractor fan, with electrical issues also suspected as a contributing factor.
At the time of the incident, the restaurant was open and conducting normal business. No injuries have been reported.
