Midnight anti-trafficking raid at Diamond turns up 17 Venezuelan women, no signs of TIP

Police and Ministry of Home Affairs officials carried out a late-night operation at Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD), after receiving reports of suspected trafficking in persons, but the exercise found no evidence of the offence.

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the joint operation was conducted between 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, and 12:15 a.m. on Monday, April 13, at a building in the Diamond area.

Ranks from Police Headquarters and Regional Division 4 ‘B’, along with personnel from the Ministry of Home Affairs, were involved in the exercise.

Police said that acting on information received, the team visited the premises, where they encountered 17 Venezuelan women. The women were screened for possible indicators of trafficking in persons, but investigators found no signs of such activity.

Following the screening, the individuals were allowed to leave. Police also searched the building, but said nothing illegal was found. No arrests were made.
