Two Chinese nationals were robbed Thursday night near the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge at Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD), after armed bandits attacked them on a motorcycle.
Police said the alleged robbery under arms occurred at about 7:55 p.m. along the Providence Public Road.
According to preliminary investigations, the two men, both of Eccles, were walking north along the eastern carriageway pavement on their way home when three identifiable males on a motorcycle confronted them.
Investigators said one of the pillion riders got off the motorcycle armed with a handgun and approached one of the victims. A scuffle reportedly broke out during which the suspect allegedly struck the man on the head, injuring him, before robbing him of cash.
At the same time, the other pillion rider reportedly dismounted and robbed the second victim of two cellular phones and cash.
Police said a 23-year-old armed security officer who was in the area saw what was happening and fired a shot into the air.
The gunmen then allegedly opened fire in the direction of the security officer before escaping on the motorcycle, heading south along the East Bank Access Road.
Emergency Medical Technicians were called to the scene, and the injured victim was taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where he received treatment. Police said there were no gunshot injuries.
Investigators recovered four 9mm spent shells from the scene, which have been lodged for examination. Police are continuing their investigations.
