The Government is moving to strengthen solid waste management in Region Two with 10 garbage collection trucks now en route to the Pomeroon-Supenaam region, as part of a wider push to improve sanitation services across Guyana.

The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development said the initiative is part of the administration’s ongoing effort to equip local authorities with the resources needed to maintain cleaner, healthier communities.

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand had previously announced that the Government of President Dr. Irfaan Ali would ensure that every Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) and municipality receives at least one garbage compactor truck.

According to the ministry, that commitment is now being rolled out, with the government seeking to provide local democratic organs with the equipment needed to better manage solid waste collection and disposal.

The ministry said the renewed focus on waste management comes amid concerns raised by citizens across the country about irregular garbage collection and the effects of improper waste disposal on public health and the environment.

By equipping local authorities with modern equipment, the government hopes to improve garbage collection reliability and reduce illegal dumping and environmental degradation.

The ministry noted that, as of September last year, only one NDC in Guyana had a functioning garbage truck, while four others had trucks out of service.

It added that Region One recently received two compactor trucks, the first ever for that region, while Region Five received one truck.

Now, 10 trucks are being dispatched to Essequibo to serve one municipality and the five NDCs located along the coast.

With about 70 NDCs across Guyana, the government said it is working towards ensuring that by mid-2026, each NDC will have the equipment required to carry out efficient waste management operations.
