A 69-year-old pedestrian, Anjanie Mohabir of Block 8 Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (ECD), died after she was struck by a motorcycle on Tuesday, at about 17:50 hrs on the northern carriageway of Industry Public Road.

Police said the accident involved motorcycle CR 523, driven by a 29-year-old man of Owen Street, Kitty, Georgetown, who had a 28-year-old female of Barr Street, Kitty, Georgetown, as the pillion rider.

Investigation so far revealed that the motorcycle was proceeding east along the northern carriageway on the pedestrian walkway at the time when traffic travelling in the same direction had stopped to allow Mohabir to cross the road. A collision subsequently occurred between the motorcycle and the pedestrian.

As a result, the motorcyclist, the pillion rider, and Mohabir sustained injuries and were escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where they were seen and examined by doctors on duty.

Mohabir later succumbed while receiving medical treatment. The pillion rider was admitted for observation, while the motorcyclist was treated and discharged.

Police said they reviewed CCTV footage and will obtain it as part of the ongoing investigation. A breathalyser test conducted on the motorcyclist reportedly showed no alcohol.

The motorcycle is being held pending investigation, and the driver remains in police custody, assisting with the probe.
