A routine traffic enforcement exercise on the Essequibo Coast has sparked a police investigation after ranks discovered what appeared to be alcoholic beverages inside a minibus carrying 20 school-aged passengers.
The driver is now in custody, while the children were handed over to a Child Care Officer for further intervention, police said.
The incident occurred around 13:30h on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, along the Lima Public Road, Essequibo Coast, during a traffic enforcement operation.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), ranks observed a minibus parked on the eastern side of the roadway with twenty school-aged passengers inside. When they approached the vehicle, police said they saw items that appeared to be alcoholic beverages within the bus.
The driver was instructed to proceed to the Anna Regina Police Station, where the minibus was searched in the presence of relevant authorities. During that search, police said several bottles suspected to contain alcoholic beverages, along with other items, were found inside the vehicle.
Police said the students were handed over to a Child Care Officer for further intervention. The driver was arrested and remains in custody. The minibus has since been lodged, with investigations continuing.
