Woman,29, dies following accident on Anna Regina Public Road, driver in custody

A 29-year-old Essequibo Coast woman has died after she was struck by a motor car along the Anna Regina Public Road on Friday night.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that the accident occurred at about 21:50 hrs on Friday, January 23, 2026, involving motor car PAK 4313, driven by a 54-year-old man of Onderneeming, Essequibo Coast, and pedestrian Ashley Holder, 29, of Bushlot, Essequibo Coast.

According to preliminary investigations, the car was proceeding south along the eastern driving lane when the driver reported feeling an impact at the front of the vehicle. Police said the driver stopped and observed Holder lying unconscious in front of the car.

Holder was reportedly picked up by the driver and taken to the Lima Regional Hospital, where she was examined by a doctor on duty and admitted with injuries to her body and head.

The driver was later arrested and escorted to the Anna Regina Police Station, where a breathalyser test reportedly revealed 10 micrograms, which police said is below the legal limit of 30 micrograms. He remains in custody.

Police said that on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at about 05:56 hrs, Holder was pronounced dead by a doctor while receiving medical attention.

Investigators are expected to review video footage extracted from the vehicle’s dash camera as the probe continues.
