A post-mortem examination conducted on the body of 24-year-old security guard Vishal Miguel has confirmed that he died from a gunshot wound to the head, police said on Saturday.

Miguel, who worked at a shipping establishment at Unity, Parika, had previously been reported missing before his body was discovered in the Essequibo River earlier this week.

According to police, Miguel was last seen on Monday, March 2, 2026, at about 19:00 hrs when he reportedly entered the shipping yard to begin his night duties.

Investigations revealed that at about 08:00 hrs on Wednesday, March 4, the proprietor of the establishment visited the location and discovered that several outboard engines were missing from boats docked in the river.

A search of the surrounding area was subsequently conducted, during which Miguel’s body was observed floating in the Essequibo River.

The body was retrieved and positively identified as that of the 24-year-old security guard. He was later escorted to the DeKinderen Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead before being taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Home to await a post-mortem examination.

The post-mortem examination was carried out on Thursday, March 6, between 10:00 hrs and 10:30 hrs at the Ezekiel Funeral Home by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh.

Dr. Singh concluded that Miguel died as a result of a gunshot injury to the head.

Following the examination, Miguel’s body was handed over to relatives for funeral arrangements.
