Police in Region Six have arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of 61-year-old businessman Chen Yongping, who was fatally stabbed during an alleged robbery at Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice, last week.

Region Six Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus confirmed that investigators, acting on information received, arrested a 17-year-old of Bun Bush Dam, Canje, and two 29-year-olds of Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme on Monday.

The Commander said the suspects were cautioned and interviewed, during which they made admissions. All three remain in police custody as investigations continue.

The arrests stem from an alleged murder committed on Monday, December 22, 2025, at about 05:00 hrs, at Cumberland Village, East Canje, which resulted in Yongping’s death and injuries to another businessman, 32, of the same address.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed that the two victims had returned home after travelling earlier that morning when they were confronted by two identifiable males armed with knives. The suspects allegedly robbed them of a quantity of Guyana currency and mobile phones.

During the confrontation, both men sustained injuries and stab wounds and were escorted to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for medical attention. Yongping later succumbed to his injuries, while the 32-year-old was treated for his wounds.
