An 18-year-old and a 54-year-old farmer are in police custody after ranks in Region Eight intercepted them with two shotguns and ammunition during a mobile ATV patrol along the Chenapou Trail.

Police said the discovery was made on Monday, at about 16:30 hrs, when ranks observed two males walking in a westerly direction with what appeared to be shotguns on their shoulders. Upon noticing the patrol, the men allegedly behaved suspiciously and attempted to conceal the weapons.

The men were ordered to stop, but police said they attempted to flee and were apprehended. A 16-gauge shotgun was found in the possession of the 18-year-old farmer of Bashville Village, North Pakaraimas, while a 20-gauge shotgun was recovered from the 54-year-old farmer of the same address, police reported.

Police said a search of the suspects resulted in the discovery of five cartridges on the 54-year-old and four cartridges on the 18-year-old. When questioned, both men reportedly told ranks they are not holders of firearm licences.

The suspects were arrested and escorted to the Kato Police Station, where they were placed into custody.
